Lipari and the Aeolian islands offer great hiking opportunities. In this page we present Lipari and some of the trekking routes available.

B. Old Kaolin Mine - Quattropani

Starting-point: Street to old Kaolin Mine At a glance: Old Kaolin Mine - Punta Palmeto - Quattropani Altitude difference: 340 mt. Highest point: Old Kaolin Mine (360 mt.) Duration: about 4 hours Length: about 3 km Difficulty: Trekking/moderate off-trail

We leave the cab/car on the way to the old Kaolin mine. We will be back to this starting point in about 4 hours.

We walk then down to Sea level (40 mt) to Punta Palmeto. Click on the map above to zoom. Once near Punta Palmeto be careful keeping distance from the steep down to the water.

From Palmeto, walk north having mount Timpone Palaso (305 mt) and Timpone Mazzacaruso (356 mt) on your right. You walk about 1 km along the coast before the route begins to climb up the mountain again.

The trekking route takes you then slowly up to Quattropani. Back on the street you have to go about 700 mt uphill back to the starting point.

Alternative itinerary: Down at Punta Palmento you are also able to go south to San Calogero. Se description C.

Useful advice: The hike require medium condition as the way back goes from about sea level up to 350 mt. Be sure to take drinking water (2 lit per person in summer) with you and a good hat to protect your head from the sun. In the summer season you are recommended to do the walking in the early morning or late evening. You will enjoy splendid views.

C. Old Kaolin Mine - San Calogero

We go to the old Kaolin mine by cab/car. We wont come back to this starting point so tell your cab/car driver to join you at San Calogero after minimum 3 hours.

We walk then down to Sea level (40 m) to Punta Palmeto. Click on the map above to zoom. Once near Punta Palmeto be careful keeping distance from the steep down to the water.

From Palmeto, walk south having Mount Mazzacaruso (322 m) on your left. You have to walk about 1.5 km.

The trekking route takes you then slowly up to San Calogero with the prehistoric termal bath. It is known to be the oldest sauna ever found.

Alternative itinerary: Down at Punta Palmeto you are also able to go north along the coast. See description B.

Useful advice: The hike is easy, but be sure to get water with you and a summer hat to protect your head from the sun. In the summer season you are recommended to do the walking in the early morning. You will enjoy splendid views.

D. Lipari - Monte della Guardia - Osservatorio

The hike begin on the street to Quattropani above Marina Corta. The walk begins with a steep route up to Monte Giardina at 250 mt above lea level. You will enjoy Lipari town from a birds perspective walking up the hill!

Up on the hill you will see the Mount Giardina vulcano grape cultivation on your right before you reach the west coast hills of Lipari. Walking along the coast at 250 mt level you will have Monte della Guardia on your left. Enjoy the great breathtaking panorama with the two Faraglioni, Vulcano island on the south and if the air is clear, mount Etna in Sicily, with snow on the top during winter season. On the photo above you have Mount Etna covered by clouds. Keep away from the dangereous steeps!!!

You continue then to the Salvatore area and reach then the seismic observatory, Osservatorio. From the observatory back to Lipari you walk on a car street.

Alternative itinerary: There are two ways back to Lipari from the observatory. We recommend the longer street along the coast.

Useful advice: The hike require medium condition as the route start walking uphill from sea level up to 250 mt. Be sure to take drinking water (2 lit per person in summer) with you, a good hat to protect your head from the sun and something to eat. In the summer season you are recommended to do the walking in the afternoon, at least 4 hours before sunset. You will enjoy breathtaking views.
